Steps to make Red Lentils Khichdi:
  1. Heat ghee/oil in a small kadai. Add cumin seeds, cardamoms, cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns and asafoetida.
  2. Add green chillies and curry leaves and saute for few seconds. Add onions and saute till they are translucent.
  3. Add ginger paste and garlic paste and saute till the raw smell leaves.
  4. Add tomatoes and salt and cook till they become soft and mushy.
  5. Add turmeric powder, pepper powder, cumin powder and garam masala and saute for sometime.
  6. Add this in a rice steamer with rice, red lentils and water and let it cook till done. ie. For about 12 to 15 minutes. Serve hot with Pickle, Salad, Raita etc.

Sauté the sweet onion in a little olive oil on medium-low heat until they are translucent. Then, add in the garlic and sauté for a few minutes more, checking often to ensure garlic doesn't brown.
